Felix The Cat Wiki

Sammy Johnsin is a secondary character in Felix the Cat cartoons. He was featured in the Felix short Felix Tries for Treasure.

Biography[]

Based on the comic strip Sambo and his Funny Noses by William F. Marriner, Sammy was a staple of Little Black Sambo. Today, the character's design seems insensitive, but it was typical of its time. The stories were surprisingly progressive for the time, with Sammy outwitting the mean white kids.

The black boy character is a dead ringer for "Sambo" from the McClure syndicate comic strip "Sambo And His Funny Noises," which ran from 1905 to 1915. He was drawn by William F. Marriner, but his assistant and ghostwriter for years was Pat Sullivan, who even took over for a year after Marriner's death.
